Outfit Formulas & The Spring Style Challenge ~ Week 3

The Spring Style Challenge is still in full swing, but I can't believe it ends this Saturday! Arghhh!! Stayed tuned for news about the Summer Challenge coming soon! If you missed this one (Spring), you definitely need to get in on the action for Summer!

Here's my recap of Days 9-14. If you missed Weeks 1 and 2 you can find them here: Week 1 & Week 2. Each week, I have been giving the "outfit formula" for the day, along with my interpretation of it.

ALSO! I'm co-hosting a link up today with the beautiful Liz from Shopping My Closet. See all the details below and link up your post!

Week 3--here it is....

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Day 11: Thursday ~ Striped Dress + Bright Flats

I wore this same dress in Week 1, but it's surprising that the jean jacket and the bright flats give it a totally different look and feel than my cardigan and sandals from Week 1. That's when you know you have a versatile piece of clothing.

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Striped Dress: Old Navy (exact)
Denim Jacket: Kut from the Kloth (exact)
Coral Flats: Payless (exact)
Red/Navy Bag: Stella & Dot (exact)
Necklace: J. Crew (similar)

Day 12: Friday ~ Camo/Patterned Pants + Bright Tee + Wedges

I confessed my love for these Express tees last week, but let me reiterate: I.LOVE.THESE.TEES!! This cobalt color is so bold and vibrant and so are all the other colors. You guys definitely need a few in your life :) For size reference I am typically between a XS and S, and I'm wearing a Small for the more "slouchy" look. They shrink the TINIEST bit, but not much at all! I loved the wedges, but changed to flats because it was a heavy errands-running day :)

Cobalt Tee: Express (exact)
Camo Pants: Loft (similar)
Wedge Sandals: Target (similar)
Cognac Flats: Payless (exact)
Flower Necklace: Similar

Day 13: Saturday ~ White Jeans + Neutral Tee + Cardi/Vest  + Wedges

I just LOVE this neutral color combo of black, white, cognac and military green. If you've been following this blog for any amount of time, you know I am ALWAYS reaching for this cargo vest. It's definitely a closet staple. I purchased it in the fall at TJ Maxx/Marshall's but I recently saw them there again! The brand is Max Studio. :)

White Jeans: Loft (exact)
Tee: Express (exact)
Cargo Vest: Similar, Similar
Necklace: Similar, Similar
Wedge Sandals: Target (similar)

Day 14: Sunday ~ Striped Dress + Floral Scarf + Sandals

It's the striped dress...again! You might be tired of it, but repeating a piece of clothing in different ways just shows how versatile the piece is! This is actually the exact outfit I wore for Easter :)

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Striped Dress: Old Navy (exact)
Floral Scarf: Target (exact)
Sandals: Similar, Similar
Hoop Earrings: Stella and Dot (exact)

Day 15: Monday ~ Printed Top + Colored Pants + Sandals

This outfit is ME in every way, shape and form. More about these pants in another blog post, but I have fallen in love with chinos...and I've fallen HARD!

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Olive Chinos: J. Crew Factory (exact, in Vintage Surplus)
Striped Tank: Loft (similar, similar)
Cognac Belt: Similar
Sandals: Similar, Similar
Hoop Earrings: Stella and Dot (exact)

Day 16: Tuesday ~ Printed Skirt + Black Tank + Cardigan + Wedges

I followed this one pretty much to the T except I subbed in flats instead of wedges since it was a work day. :)

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Striped Skirt: J. Crew Factory (exact)
Cardi: Old Navy (exact, in Mini Mint)
Black Tank: similar
Ladder Necklace: Jane.com (similar, similar)
Cognac Flats: Payless (exact)

Day 17: Wednesday ~ Striped Dress + Chambray Shirt + Bright Flats

I had my doubts about this one...I KNOW! It's the striped dress AGAIN! But now, with the chambray on top, it's more of a skirt! I'd say I got a whole lotta bang for my $15 bucks with this striped dress!!

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Striped Dress: Old Navy (exact)
Chambray Shirt: Forever 21 (similar)
Necklace: J. Crew (similar)
Coral Flats: Payless (exact)

I definitely felt the most comfortable on Day 15, but Day 17 was also an unexpected favorite! Do you have a fave? Would you try any of these outfit formulas?

Next Wednesday, I'll be wrapping up the last 4 outfits from the Style Challenge. I can't believe it's nearly over! Again, if you missed any of the Style Challenge posts you can find them here: Week 1 & Week 2.

Mom Style Files ~ Volume 2

Well, April just FLEW by and the month is coming to a close. That means it's time for another edition of Mom Style Files! The goal of my "wardrobe" posts are always to give approachable, wearable outfits/styling ideas for busy mom/gals/ladies/hot grandmas, what have you :) I've mentioned it before, but I don't show anything on the blog that I haven't worn (or would wear) "in real life."

Near the end of each month, I put together some of my "real life" outfits that I wore out and about...to work, to pick up the kids, to run errands, to go to baseball games--everyday stuff. Everyday, real life outfits ~ that's what Mom Style Files is all about. You can catch last month's edition HERE.

This month, I have been doing the 2015 Spring Style Challenge , so I have been recapping all of my daily outfits on Wednesdays. See Week 1 HERE and Week 2 HERE. Below are a few outfits that I wore before the Challenge started. Hope you get some inspiration!

Outfit 1: I work 2 days a week at my kid's school as a learning specialist so 2 days a week, I have to wear something other than jeans :) I purchased this skirt for the Spring Style Challenge and it's perfect for work or church! Next fall, I'll be wearing it with my boots, too!

Skirt: J Crew Factory (exact)
Coral Tee: Nordstrom (exact, in Heather Red Fiesta)
Necklace: J Crew (option, option)
Cognac Belt: Similar
Cognac Flats: Payless (exact)

Outfit 2: Jeans and stripes. That's "everyday" for me! I added nice earrings to fancy it up a bit! :)

Jeans: Nordstrom (exact)
Striped Tee: Target (exact)
Cardi/Shrug: Target (similar)
Nude Flats: Payless (similar)

Outfit 3: White, black and leopard! Love this combo!

White Jeans: Loft (exact)
Black Tee: Similar
Denim Jacket: Nordstrom (similar)
Leopard Belt: Target (exact)
Leopard Flats: Similar
Necklace: Stella and Dot (exact)

Outfit 4: I used to think I could only wear these burgundy cords in the fall/winter, but when I paired it with this floral top, it immediately looked "springy!" Score!

Burgundy Cords: Loft (similar)
Floral Top: Target (exact, but I could only find plus size online)
Necklace: Stella and Dot (exact)
Nude Flats: Payless (similar)

Outfit 5: Are you starting to see a pattern? Yes, I like my stripes! This is one of my easiest outfit formulas--jeans, striped tee, scarf, cardi. I love mixing stripes and florals for spring!

Notice anything else??! In 5 of the 6 outfits I'm showing I am wearing flats...and they are ALL from PAYLESS! Yep, PAYLESS!! I have become a true Payless Dexflex convert! They are the most comfortable shoes you can imagine and they are always coming out with cute patterns and colors. I own 4 pair and I will probably never buy another kind of flat again unless someone wants to pony up for a Tory Burch pair for me, and I guarantee those won't be as comfy as these babies!

Jeans: Nordstrom (exact)
Striped Tee: Forever 21 (similar)
Cardi: Old Navy (similar)
Floral Scarf: TJ Maxx (similar)
Nude Flats: Payless (similar)

Outfit 6: If you've been following this blog since I first started doing wardrobe posts a few months ago, you've seen this dress before! I originally bought it in the Fall ($7 on clearance at at Target) and wore it with tall boots all winter. But it also works with bare legs and ankle boots for spring! See other ways I have worn this dress HERE.

Striped Dress: Target (similar, cute spring option!)
Cargo Vest: TJ Maxx (similar)
Ankle Boots: Carlos Santana at DSW (similar)
Necklace: Jane (similar)

Have a great week! See you back here on Wednesday for 7 more outfit formulas from the Spring Style Challenge!!

SEVEN ON SUNDAY ~ WEEK 17

Day 1: Sunday ~ This place. Our church. I needed it so much on Sunday! Sarah was still sick, so I took Brooke and Will and it was awesome just to be there without worrying about Sarah screaming or picking her nose and wiping it on someone. It was truly peaceful. Then a good friend posted the quote below on Facebook and after that, my week went a lot more smoothly :)

Day 2: Monday ~ This is how we do Monday dinner at the ballpark.

Day 3: Tuesday ~ Sarah still wasn't feeling well, so Mommy had to take a sick day. We did lots of cuddles, Dora and the Shopkins game. :)

Day 4: Wednesday ~ I went to the library to check out a book my friend recommended, but they didn't have it, so I picked up this one instead. It's awesome!!! I so needed a lot of what was in this book! See my quote below? You can tell I needed a whole lotta Jesus this week!!!

Day 5: Thursday ~ Well, he survived freezing temps (and Mommy forgot his jacket!) and gale force winds and still got the team ball! The girls and I had awesome seats from the car--we couldn't hack it.

Our view from the car--we didn't miss a thing!

Day 6: Friday ~ As you guys know, Friday night is Pizza Night at the Rooneys. Tonight it was Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza....enough said.

Day 7: Saturday ~ Will requested "homemade chicken strips" for dinner tonight...and when this kid requests food, I make it because he has NO interest in food and doesn't eat JACK :) Mama got the thumbs up all around on the chicken--soooo yummy!!!!

Have a wonderful week!!! See you back here tomorrow for this month's edition of Mom Style Files :)

FOODIE FRIDAY ~ Healthy Fish Tacos with Chipotle Cream

I spent Spring Break in San Diego and my vacation would just not have been complete had I not sunk my teeth into a delicious, crunchy, greasy San Diego fish taco!!  Those things are take-out staples down there..along with burritos. Side note--I had the BEST BURRITO of my entire LIFE in La Jolla!! The Taco Stand--check it out. It's life changing.

Clearly the way fish tacos are "supposed" to be (deep fried, slathered in a yummy cream sauce concoction), isn't exactly figure-friendly. Being that it is almost summer and shorts and tank tops will be in the rotation soon, I'm sharing my "healthy" take on this delicious meal!!! Again, this is super easy and the fish cooks in no time! You can make the chipotle cream a day in advance if you're a planner like that :) You can find chipotles in adobo in the Mexican aisle at any grocery store.

Healthy Fish Tacos with Chipotle Cream Recipe

Healthly Fish Tacos with Chipotle Cream
Makes 4-6 good-sized tacos

For the Fish~

1 lb. wild-caught white fish (cod is good, halibut is better but any white fish works)
Lemon pepper
Salt

For the Chipotle Cream ~

1/2 cup low fat sour cream
1-2 tablespoons of the sauce from canned chipotles (see above)
3 scallions, minced
Dash of cumin
Juice from 1/2 lime
Pinch of sugar
Salt to taste

Other/Garnishes ~
4-6 small corn tortillas
Lime
Cilanto
Shredded lettuce or cabbage
Avocado
Tomato (optional)

1. Make the Chipotle Cream: Whisk together all ingredients and refrigerate until needed.

2. Heat a skillet to medium high heat. Season fish well with lemon pepper and salt. Drizzle a little olive oil in the pan and add fish.

3. Depending on the thickness of your cut of fish, cook 2-3 minutes (or longer for thicker cuts) on each side or until the fish in opaque and cooked through. If you are unsure or have never cooked fish, just cut it and see if it's cooked through--you'll be cutting up the fish anyway for the tacos!

4. Remove fish from pan. With a fork or a knife, cut fish into large chunks so they will fit nicely into a small tortilla.

5. Warm tortillas in the microwave for a few seconds.

6. Assemble tacos: Place a few pieces of fish on your tortilla. Top with the Chipotle Cream, cilantro, lettuce, avocado and finish it off with a nice squeeze of lime.

SO. DARN. GOOD. It's like the beach on a plate. You can picture the San Diego sunset as you eat.....

Outfit Formulas & The Spring Style Challenge ~ Week 2

The Spring Style Challenge is in full swing and what a fun week!!! I started the Style Challenge last week--click HERE to see last week's outfits (Outfit Formulas 1-3). This week was the first full week of outfits, so you get 7 outfit formulas, how I styled these "formulas" and how my Style Blogger friends styled their outfits (they are linked up below).

Here we go!!!

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Outfit Formula 4: Thursday ~ Chambray Shirt + White Tank + Dark Wash Jeans + Bright Flats

I love denim on denim as you know from my Denim Jacket post, but honestly, this one I struggled with! But I was persistent and I think I finally made it work!! Since it was 80 degrees this day, I subbed in jean shorts for regular jeans--i liked the outfit so much better with shorts!! I also swapped out the bright flats for my cognac sandals. Pearls and chambray are a match made in heaven...I learned this from the girls doing the Challenge with me!

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms
Denim Shorts: J. Crew Factory (exact)
Chambray Shirt: Forever 21 (similar)
Sandals: Similar, Similar

Outfit Formula 5: Friday ~ Bright Jacket/Cardigan + Printed Top + Dark Wash Jeans + Wedges

Another 80 degree day, so I had to ditch the bright jacket/cardigan layer. You've seen me wear this top before HERE and this is basically the same outfit, I just wore my boyfriend skinnies from Old Navy and not my flares. Changing one thing made the outfit look and feel different to me.

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms
Printed Top: Target (exact, I could only find plus size online but some stores may still have it)
Distressed Jeans: Old Navy (exact)
Wedge Sandals: Target (similar
Earrings: Stella and Dot (exact)

Outfit Formula 6: Saturday ~ Gray Tee + White Jeans + Long Necklace + Sandals

This outfit screams ME!! Jeans and a T-shirt??!! Perfection :) These Express knot tees are my new favorite thing--they are HEAVEN for a jeans and tee gal like myself! It's kinda knotted and half-tucked for you--it styles itself!! I HIGHLY recommend them!!!

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms
Gray Tee: Express (exact, ON SALE!!!!)
White Jeans: Loft (exact)
Sandals: Similar, Similar

Outfit Formula 7: Sunday ~ Chambray Shirt + Printed Skirt + Bright Flats

The Challenge recommended a floral skirt, but for me, stripes are so much more practical. I'd been wanting this striped skirt forever, so this was the perfect opportunity to get it and start styling it! This is a perfect spring work outfit for me.

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Striped Skirt: J. Crew Factory (exact)
Chambray Shirt: Loft (similar)
Coral Flats: Payless (exact)

Outfit Formula 8: Monday ~ Cardigan + Gray Tee + Jeans + Scarf + Flats

Doesn't get more basic than this! This is one of my go-to formulas for spring and fall. In the spring, I love the pastels for the cardi and florals for the scarf . In the fall, I just switch it up and use warmer colors for the cardi and plaids and rich colors for the scarf. So versatile!

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Cardi: Old Navy (exact, in Mini Mint)
Tee: Express (exact)
Floral Scarf: Old Nacy (exact)
Nude Flats: Payless (similar)

Outfit Formula 9: Tuesday ~ Cardigan + Black Tee + Colored Denim + Sandals

Another day, another Express tee. I have two favorite tees--these from Nordstrom and the Express ones. I'm not sure why I keep ANY other tees around!! They are just wasting space in my closet!

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Mint Jeans: Loft (similar)
Black Tee: Express (exact)
Cardi/Shrug: Target (similar)
Sandals: Similar, Similar
Necklace: Charming Charlie (similar)

Outfit Formula 10: Wednesday ~ Printed Top + White Jeans + Bright Flats

The beauty of a printed top is that it speaks for itself. No need to add too many accessories or anything to jazz it up. I did add a little bracelet stack to keep it fun, though :) You can see how I do my simple bracelet stacks HERE.

Spring Outfit Formulas for Moms

Printed Top: TJ Maxx (cute option, cute option)
White Jeans: Loft (exact)
Coral Flats: Payless (exact)

I truly hope you can use some of these outfit formulas and start creating some fun, new outfits! Also, I am pretty sure there will be a Summer Style Challenge too starting in June, so start thinking ahead! :) Get some friends together and go for it! It's so much fun--a great place to get out of a wardrobe rut or if you just want some new, fresh outfit ideas and inspiration!

Seven more outfit formulas coming to ya next Wednesday! If you missed the first 3 outfit formulas, you can find them HERE.
