If you haven't been following my friend Carrie for her Shop and be Free for 3 group, you really should be! Read all about it HERE.
In this group, Carrie talks a lot about defining your personal style--figuring out what is really YOU vs. what looks good on someone else or in a picture. I think this Pinned It post illustrates this point perfectly. I swooned over this look because it has every single element I love--camo, chambray, sparkle! And I love how the "edgy" (camo) is pair with the more conservative button down.
Frankly, in "real life" I hated this outfit. Well, hate is a strong word but number one, I didn't feel comfortable in it. I have pretty much decided sweater and button down is NOT me.
While I love all of these pieces separately (camo, sweater, chambray, ankle boots) I just don't like them all together.
These camo pants still continue to get TONS of wear, mostly because they are so darn comfy! But then paired with the "stuffy" button down and sweater, it defeats the purpose of throwing on my most comfy pair of pants, ya know??
I think it's really important to come to grips with the fact that every "flat lay" and awesome looking outfit on Pinterest and on Instagram might not look or FEEL good on you! And that is A-OK! I mean, sometimes I seriously wonder if other super high end fashion bloggers actually WEAR the stuff they blog about! Since I am all about practicality, I don't get much joy out of perusing outfits I'll never wear!
Has this ever happened to you before? Have you ever lusted over an outfit online, then it fell flat for you? I think this a GREAT thing, actually because each time you "fail" at an outfit, you come closer and closer to defining your own personal style :) I like to call it "failing forward."
Have a great day, friends!!!

Well I like this look on you, but I totally understand that you have to feel comfortable in it too. I can totally relate to flatlays not working all the time in "real life". I just started doing flatlays for Instagram so I plan out my outfits for the week in advance so I can take pictures. Sometimes they look a lot better "flat" so I have to make some tweaks :)

I don't like flat lays because I need to see the clothes on a real body. How colors and fibers look laying flat can look completely different when you add another dimension....the human body. I love the necklace and booties you have on.
ReplyDeleteLove your take! It looks great!

Super cute! I would love to try out a pair of camo pants but I've never found a decent pair for me. Until then, I'll live through you and Carrie (if she kept hers) :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Casey. I love how the button up shirt layered under a sweater looks, but it just isn't very comfortable. You look super cute
ReplyDeleteYou look great! I actually don't like the shirt under sweat either so I usually just buy the faux collared ones that look like I had a shirt underneath (kinda cheating but a lot more comfy and less bulky)

I think the look is cute but I am not a fan of button ups under sweaters. They are too hot for me and I always feel so restricted. Thank you for hosting and hope you are having a fab week!

Hope to see you Thursday for TBT Fashion link up.
It does look great on you, but I totally agree with you on the button down with a sweater over it, feels bulky and also feel like I'm constantly tugging on it...I need to start pinning outfits before I try my next stitch fix, that was a super random comment.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you! The flatlay is a GREAT idea. But so true that when you're trying to pair comfy with stuffy it kind of defeats the purpose...

I have had the same issue, where the outfit looked cute as a flatlay, but didn't work on me. I love your camp pants, and hope to find a pair I like one day! Thanks for hosting this fun link up!

Not only do I love this look but you have totally inspired me! I'm going to copy this for sure.
ReplyDeleteSome flat lays are so awesome like the one above. Though I love your own real-life outfit, I do think it looks cuter on the laid down pin. I love sweaters/sweatshirts with button-down shirts but I don't think every sweater can be worn with a button-down. Some look kind of bulky.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your Create 28 with friends this time. Which bloggers have you guys invited? =)
I'm glad you didn't do away with it because it looks real nice all put together and love the camo pants. I see why you like wearing them. I clicked on the link of your friend's shop but it lead me to a page not found. Sadly I missed the linkup :(
